Lessons from Decorex CT: You are LEATHER!

I was fortunate enough to exhibit at the fabulous Decorex Cape Town last week.

WHAT an experience!

Firstly, let me just say that South Africa is drrrripping with talent! Every time I think, “now I’ve really seen it all”, someone’s sheer creative brilliance knocks my socks off! Our neighbouring stallholders travelled from all over the country to showcase their spectacular products. And I am not exaggerating when I say that every single one of them is just the loveliest person under the sun! There was a genuine sense of camaraderie that made for an excellent atmosphere!

Add to this the fabulous crowd, who delivered their own kind of magic! From outfits that can only be described as works of art (every time I think, “now I’ve seen it all”…!), to some of the kindest, most genuinely interested and interesting people that I have ever met at an in-person event. If you were one of these lovely people -- THANK YOU and welcome to my happy struggling journey!

One interaction, in particular, has stayed with me, and I’d love to share it with you:

A gentleman slowly browses through my stall, asking thoughtful questions and paying gentle compliments. He then shares that his daughter is also an artist, and he has great respect and admiration for what we do. Then, he says, “I don’t know if you need to hear this or if it will even make sense to you, but I’m going to share it anyway. I want you to remember that you are leather.”

“Leather?” I ask uncertainly.

“Leather,” he reiterates. “You are smooth and even on one side — beautifully presented to the world. But underneath, you are rough and a little messy. Both of these sides make you what you are. You are strong and flexible. You do not easily break. You are valuable and crafted to last. You are leather.”

Needless to say, I became quite teary-eyed… How magical that a complete stranger would choose to take the time to share with me exactly what I needed to hear…

My experience at Decorex restored my faith in mankind. It served as a precious reminder that South Africa and her people are deliciously unique and kind; vibrant and full of curiosity; vulnerable and brave! We are a kaleidoscope of colour and culture! How can one not feel positive and patriotic when surrounded by such beauty?!

Perhaps you need to hear it. Perhaps it will speak to some niggling insecurity or fear that you cannot shake. Hear me now: You are leather.
