Help me choo-hoo-hoo-hoose an owl photo

This pair of Spotted Eagle-owls were one of our favourite sightings during our recent camping trip in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. They roosted exactly 10km outside the Mata-mata gate, and we found them here on every drive. I'm suuuuper tempted to use one of these images as reference for a photo-realistic watercolour painting (don't know how I'm going to handle all those branches yet -- eek!)... After all, it would be very much on-point for my 2026 wildlife calendar - "Feathered Friends".

Before I ask your opinion, I feel I have to admit that the owl in pic number 4 is not calling...... It just threw up a pellet! But, pretty good timing, right?

Also, perhaps a little insight into how I usually choose reference photos. These are things that often jump out at me: Strong contrast (give me those moody shadows and bright highlights!), a spark of light in the eyes (they’re the window to the soul, after all), and a sense of movement or potential action — even in a still pose. I’m also a sucker for something a little different: an unusual angle, quirky posture, or just that something that makes it feel alive and full of character. It’s hard to explain, but when I feel it, I just know. Trust your gut! There is no right or wrong answer here.

Comment below to let me know which image you think is the strongest: 1, 2, 3, 4? I'll also accept, "None of them rock my boat - keep looking!". ;)

PS. Do you have a striking image of an owl that you would love to see me paint? Please contact me!
