If you follow me on Instagram and Facebook, you would have noticed by now that I suckkk at taking selfies... BUT -- I am a firm believer that we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously. So, I thought it would be fun to share my best worst selfies of 2020 as a kind of introduction to me in the New Year. So...
Nice to e-meet you! My name is Corinne, and I am The Happy Struggling Artist. As the daughter of two biologists, I was brought up with a deep-rooted passion for South African wildlife. Although I always loved drawing as a child, the realisation that I wanted to be a professional artist only dawned on me quite a bit later in life, after years of feeling like I would never find myself and my purpose…
In 2015, just before I married my wonderful hubby, I was painting a pack of wild dogs as a gift for our best man. It suddenly hit me — I should be doing more of this!
Not long after we were married, we moved to gorgeous Cape Town. At some stage I had four part-time jobs to keep the ship afloat, while I side-hustled as an artist! These days, I am lucky enough to be a full-time artist. Solopreneurship is a challenging lifestyle, but it’s also very rewarding and I love what I do. If you’ve read this far — thank you, and I hope you enjoy sharing in my happy struggling journey!
Now, back to the collection of my best worst selfies of 2020:
Why do cats always believe that they can fit in/on the most awkward spaces known to man...?
I attribute this madness to lockdown... I was working on a photo-realistic meerkat, and I think it all just got a bit too much!
Kitty strikes again!!! Not a selfie, but definitely not one of my finest moments in photography...
Taking a selfie with my work is so, SO challenging to me... Here I am posing with a Twin SA Animal Alphabet poster, and I dropped my phone!
Most of the time, I just give up and take a photo of my feet instead...!
Or I make a funny face that makes me look like I'm about to attack my work. Do you think my lioness will fight back?
Alex: "What are you doing?"
Me: "I'm trying to take a *cuss* selfie, and I can't get my *cuss* face in the frame with my *cuss* painting!
Alex: "Let me help y..."
Me: Takes hugely unflattering photo of us both, looking like *cuss* idiots......
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's just my face in the dark with only half my painting... A lot of bad selfies were taken during lockdown, painting my meerkat, "Lookout". Gorgeous reference photo shared with permission by Brian Culver.
Nearly had a heart attack when a mousebird dashed out of the hedge just above my head!!!
At least it's my good half...! Selfie with "Sweets for my Sweet", another super-realistic watercolour piece that kept me busy during lockdown.
Aaaand this is as good as it got...! Painting the original illustrations for my downloadable wall art collection.
